The newly discovered Vivian Maier will quickly be considered one of the great Rolleiflex artists. I just saw her exhibit in Chicago a couple weeks ago. Amazing.

And do you know who of those great photographers had worked with the Tele Rollei? I saw many pictures of Avedon shooting but always with a regular 2.8 Rolleiflex. Some of them must have preferred the Tele for portraits… Any link to famous examples?

You ask an interesting question Pierre. I have been thinking and doing a lot of looking on line and can't find any "famous" photographer who mentions using the Tele-Rollei. There is recently a man named Sanders McNew who got somewhat known online mostly by posting nude photos of his attractive wife in flickr and Apug and at various Rollei forums. But truly famous photographers with historical significance using the Tele-Rollei seem non existent.

Yes, I saw Sanders’s work. He is a real Rolleiflex enthusiastic. Great work indeed. He puts a Rolleinar 0.35 on the lens and then he puts a rolleinar 1 on top of it. The result is great. But your right, it seems very had to find out if the classic well known photographers have really appreciated the Tele. I think most of them were simply cropping the negative to get close portraits. I think the old adage at LIFE was "if it moves, shoot it with a Leica. If it doesn't, shoot it with a Rollei." I know Capa carried both throughout WWII. I saw a roundtable discussion on TV of octogenerian LIFE guys who all said the same. Here's an interesting piece from that era.

It seems worth adding that Queen Elizabeth II was (and possibly remains) a keen photographer and often used a Rolleiflex TLR. One of Australia's best known photographers, Max Dupain, used a Rolleiflex almost exclusively throughout his long career. His most famous black and white photograph, "The Sunbaker" was taken with one.
