I read some good advice about using the Rollei 35s: when metering a shot, and looking down at the meter, there is a natural tendency to tilt the camera slightly upward, which gives a false reading that favors the sky instead of the subject. So, purposely keep the camera leveled at the subject. Such a simple way to improve photos!

Have you tried a hand held meter. You use one hand, not two as you would with the camera; a much more natural way to point a non-ttl meter at the subject area. Cool

Hello Rollei-Friends,
the Rollei 35 is still my Number 1 camera. For metering, it depends what kind of film you are using: b&w, colour negative or slide. With b&w I suggest to point the camera at a section which should be properly reproduced. When using slide film, I usually go after the highlights to make sure the sky or any other bright section in the picture does not get "washed out". If not sure, just bracket, that is better than coming home with a bad picture.
Regards,
Siegi

Hi happy 35 shooters,

When I started as a young school-photographer my boss learned me a trick that always worked; If you have a very contrasty subject let the average light source ( say the sun ) reflect the light on your skin on the inside of your hand towards your camera meter. ( the creator must have known this when creating all different races Smile ) This acts as an accurate sort of neutral grey and gives very well balanced exposures. An other fairly neutral average is the reflection of grass or similar colored foliage.
Happy Shooting !! - Jaap
