I own this lens in qbm2 and the iris shape is triangular like in the Contarex and Arriflex versions.
Here a link http://www.luciolepri.it/lc2/marcocavina/articoli_fotografici/Zeiss_Planar_85mm_1,4/00_pag.htm but the page is most written in italian just an introduction in english.
There is someone with a Planar 85/1.4 in qbm3 or 4 that can tell me if the shape of the diaphragm is also triangular or if the newest lenses are using 8 diaphragm blades like in the Contax/Yashica version?

All the 1,4/85 Planars with Rollei QBM I've seen have the same shape diaphragm. And yes, I have seen more than one, including 3pin mount.

Maybe some day I'll be able to convince a friend to dismantle his Yashica-mount 1,4/85 and see if there is a simple chance to make a conversion to hexagonal (or was it oktogonal?) ;-)

Best,
Jan

PS: Before anybody asks, the same does apply to the Distagon 1,4/35.

Thank you Jan for your answer, I'm sure that to have seen much more than me.
In the Contax system there are two different versions with 8 blades the first one was a "ninja stars" diaphragm (picture taken originally from ebay http://www.photo4u.it/files/85_143.jpg )and the second a classic oktogonal diaphragm like showed in the article linked in my initial post.

Best wishes
Marco

Gosh, I dislike this "ninja-star" aperture shape but I'm not sure if it is two designs or just a matter of how far the aperture is closed. Leica has a similar approach with their 2/180 and with a large aperture ist says ninja, later on / closed further it is back to normal.

Best

Yes, the star aperture is only at 2 and 2.8 from 4 is a normal aperture but somewhere in the timeline (can be with MM version) Zeiss changed the shape of the blade and also the bigger aperture are normal.
Ciao
