Great Rolleiflex photographers

Hello all,

I've gotten back into the Rolleiflex thing with my recently acquired 3.5E Xenotar and I've simply loved the Rolleiflex images I've seen recently on various sites. A well-composed square format image just does it for me in a way which the more rectilinear formats don’t. And it seems easier for me to compose successfully in that format as well.

In my searches for more mouthwatering material (for inspiration), I haven't been able to find a list of great and famous Rolleiflex photographers, which is odd considering the Rolleiflex is such an enduring and famous camera. Would anyone provide some names?

Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Robert Doisneau, John Gutmann, Fritz Henle, Eduard Boubat, Lee Miller and others, mostly from the 1940's and '50's.

My inspiration for getting a rolleiflex instead of any other camera was because of the quality of the pictures taken by both Helmut Newton and Diane Arbus. Two of the most accomplished photographers ever IMHO.

It is unbelievable to me that no one has named Fritz Henle, the man who pioneered the professional use of the Rollei in the early 1930s and was known as "Mr. Rollei" throughout his long, distinguished, and prolific career. He was my first great inspiration in photography, and remains to this day one of the most influential photographers in my life and work.

Another great photographer no one has mentioned is Robert Doisneau, who did some of his most significant work with the Rollei.

BTW, W. Eugene Smith used an Ikoflex early on, including some of his WWII work.
